Broadcast Engineer

NEP Bow Tie is the premier managed services provider delivering Media Solutions, Broadcast and Audio Visual services and Systems Installations for Parliaments and Government Authorities in the UK.

Overview of the role:

We are looking for an Engineer to join our team of truly multi skilled operational staff. The role is based in central London but there could be opportunity to travel working as part of our operational engineering support team on a motor racing contract. NEP Bow Tie employ a range of welcoming teams who pride themselves in the quality of their service and staff development.

This is a key technical role in supporting our AV & Broadcast services at contract and ADHOC sites in central London as well on location, these include the UK Parliament, UK Supreme Court and the GLA, as well as our other locations as required.

Working in a number of small multi skilled teams, the main duties are; first-line maintenance of a range of Broadcast & Audio Visual equipment, fibre cable and distribution equipment, operation of technical equipment including vision control, matrix switching, rigging & operating AV systems, video and audio patching in the Central Technical Areas (CTA), web streaming services (encoders switches etc) and identifying issues and establishing workarounds and technical solutions to problems as they arise.

The successful candidate would need to be unflappable under pressure and an enthusiastic team player. They would need to demonstrate tangible enthusiasm for the work and real potential for learning, as well as an aptitude and confident attitude to the operation of equipment in live meeting environments.

The hours of work and days on shift are unpredictable, depending on how our client’s business is scheduled and will include weekend working. Should you work more than five days in one week then you will receive a day off ‘in lieu’.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • First-line fault finding and repair of a range of Broadcast and AV equipment minimising loss of service

  • Vision control operations – operation of OCP and RCP on broadcast camera channels

  • Set up, operation and first line maintenance of CTA systems – video and audio matrices, video and audio patching, vision switchers, audio mixers, routers and keyers etc

  • Media Asset Management systems support and operation

  • Rigging and de-rigging of broadcast and audio-visual equipment – this can involve manual handling of heavy items

  • Operation of remote controlled broadcast cameras

  • Dealing with both hardware and software problems in MS Office and Broadcast IT systems

  • Setting up and operating streaming, encoding and transcoding equipment

  • Work with 3rd party technologies including CDN, and web based video players

  • Operating DSLR/audio kit for video recording

  • Basic editing using FCP, Adobe Premier etc

  • Interpreting and implementing instructions and requests from clients, producers, directors and other colleagues

  • Using online ticketing system to raise and track fault resolution

  • Working with project managers and engineers on small-scale project work, design, build etc

  • Administration when required – answering emails, answering phone calls, taking messages generating client quotes

  • Communicating effectively – whether by spoken or written word, telephone or email, good communication skills are vital in this job

  • Working effectively as part of a small team

  • Maintaining punctuality and a smart appearance at all times; wearing company or client uniforms if required

Experience required:

  • Ideally should be able to demonstrate three or more years’ experience working in a broadcast environment, with experience racking cameras on live outside sports (i.e. have a good eye for colour balance and light levels) where, cameras, audio and associated vision and sound signal distribution equipment were rigged, operated and maintained on daily basis.

  • RCP/OCP operation on HD and 4K camera experience is desirable.
